Old texts are automatically removed by a process known as the garb. By default, the garb will remove all texts when it looks at them. There are several things that can save a text from removal:
mark-text.
set-presentation.
set-etc-motd.
set-motd-of-lyskom.
set-user-area.
dont-garb bit set.

nice days old, for any of the
recipients. nice is part of the Conference status.
set-garb-nice. All recipient types, recpt,
cc-recpt and bcc-recpt, counts. If the text was added
to the conference after its creation, the check is made against the
addition time instead of the creation time.

add-comment and
add-footnote.
keep-commented field of any of the recipients of the text and
the comment/footnote, it is saved. All recipient types, recpt,
cc-recpt and bcc-recpt, counts.

Other texts will be removed. It is an implementation detail of the server exactly when texts will be removed.
